Hewitt Rohloff

Hewitt cycles can supply a range of bikes with Rohloff hubs,  Rohloff hubs are generally used where maintainance is kept to minimum, and reliability is important and the weight is not too important. Consequently Rohloff hubs tend to be used on touring cycles, expedition / atb cycles.

There are two main ways of fitting Rohloff hubs, either to a frame made specifically to suit a Rohloff  hub or alternatively a Rohloff hub can be retro-fitted to a current non-Rohloff specific frame, providing the frame has 135mm drop-out width and ideally straight handlebars.

Retro fitting a Rohloff hub to an existing frame or non Rohloff specific frame will mean that some form of chain tensioning will have to be used, but fitting a Rohloff hub this way will mean that the frame could be altered back to a derailleur geared set up at a later date.

Fitting a Rohloff hub to a specific Rohloff frame is certainly a neater and better way of doing things. A specific Rohloff frame has double cable routing to the rear hub, either down the down tube or along the top tube then down the seat stays. It would also have some means of tensioning the chain, this can be done with an eccentric bottom bracket system or with specific Rohloff type dropouts. The hub can also be supplied to suit disc brakes although the rotor required is a Rohloff specific item this has a larger centre hole and a four bolt fixing rather than the more usual 6 bolt ISO pattern or the centre lock style.

At Hewitt cycles we can supply our own frames set up either way or supply frames from a number of different suppliers who build frames to suit Rohloff hubs. The bike can then be built to whatever specification you require.
